A language disappears every two weeks. Traditional knowledge and cultures are fading fast in the face of the modernization, globalization and homogenization. And the planet’s wildlife and wilderness are under enormous duress. So what can we do about it? The Cultural Sanctuaries Foundation has a unique approach – to help protect both endangered culture and languages AND to protect biodiversity. In this presentation, co-founders Chris Rainier, a highly respected photographer and National Geographic explorer, and his partner Olivia McKendrick, a former corporate lawyer, will discuss the Foundation’s mission and approach. To the backdrop of Chris’ photographs taken over a 45 year career, they will explore why culture matters and how arts and crafts play a crucial role in cultural revitalization and conservation.
Fast fashion’s microfiber pollution is infiltrating our planet and bodies, but a vibrant revolution is underway. As climate challenges grow and ecosystems unravel, can textiles spark transformation? Join the founders of Around the World in 80 Fabrics (ATW80F) for a thoughtful conversation where ancestral fibers, shaped by local landscapes, intertwine with groundbreaking biofabrication. Joined by Suzanne Lee, visionary founder of Biofabricate, and IFAM’s masterful artisans, we will share a dialogue that bridges worlds - from fabrics rooted in sacred ecologies to lab-grown marvels. Discover how local knowledge and scientific innovation are coming together to shape textiles that care for both people and planet—imaginative materials that support biodiversity, spark creativity, and invite new ways of thinking. As part of this event, we’ll be showcasing a new collaborative piece with Rowland and Chinami Ricketts—an evocative textile work that explores the global stories with denims from across the globe. Join us in celebrating the past, present, and future of fabric. Let’s stitch together stories of resilience, renewal, and possibility.
